The Great Volcano Experiment

The Great Volcano Experiment

For the school science fair, I decided to build a volcano that actually erupts! 🌋

What You Need

  • Baking soda (lots of it!)
  • Vinegar
  • Red food coloring
  • Dish soap (the secret ingredient!)
  • A bottle and some clay to shape the volcano

How It Works

When baking soda (a base) meets vinegar (an acid), they react and create carbon dioxide gas. The dish soap traps the gas in bubbles, making it look like lava flowing down!

The chemical equation is:

NaHCO₃ + CH₃COOH → CO₂ + H₂O + NaCH₃COO

(Don't worry, I had to look that up too! 😄)

The Big Moment

I added extra food coloring to make it look like real lava. When I poured the vinegar in... IT ERUPTED EVERYWHERE! Way more than I expected. Mom wasn't thrilled about the kitchen floor, but the judges at the science fair loved it!

Result

I won 2nd place at the science fair! 🥈

The 1st place winner made a robot, which was pretty cool too. Maybe that's my next project...
